Cyber Skills Challenge: ADF's Pinnacle Cyber Event

Overview

The ADF Cyber Skills Challenge has cemented its position as the pinnacle event for cyber professionals and enthusiasts within the Australian Defence Force (ADF). Our company’s role in orchestrating the event has expanded to become comprehensively integrated, incorporating not just event management but also a cohesive blend of communications, branding, and digital assets.

Themed Editions

Taking cognisance of the ever-evolving nature of the cyber world, the event has been distinguished by unique themes each year. The 2021 edition drew inspiration from the 1990s, capitalising on nostalgia while integrating modern-day cyber challenges. The 2022 version transported attendees to the 2000s, allowing them to navigate a cyber landscape infused with elements from this iconic era.

The Challenge

The foremost challenge was to scale the event each year to cater to a more extensive demographic, comprising federal government agencies, defence forces, and international Five Eyes partners. Further intricacy was added by the necessity to offer a rich experience for both in-person and remote attendees. The event’s visibility needed to be amplified internationally, requiring a multifaceted approach that could integrate digital and traditional marketing techniques seamlessly.

The Solution

We maintained a 360-degree holistic approach to elevate the ADF Cyber Skills Challenge. A central hub was established through a dedicated website for information dissemination and participant registration. Commercials were strategically crafted and distributed across a variety of media platforms, and print promotions were circulated to target audiences. Media interviews were well-coordinated to ensure extended event coverage.

Moreover, we were responsible for the full spectrum of branding and graphic design across every touchpoint. Event-specific merchandise was designed to enrich the attendee experience. Hosted at the QT Hotel in Canberra, the five-day event was also available via online streaming and featured a series of workshops, presentations, and a competitive ‘Capture-the-Flag’ event. Real-time online engagement for remote participants was facilitated through platforms such as Discord and Twitch.

Unique to the 2022 Edition An exhilarating addition to the 2022 iteration was a live 3D rendering of a city designed in the shape of the event’s logo. As participants completed challenges, different areas of the city were dynamically destroyed, adding an enthralling visual element that boosted engagement and excitement.

Impact

The event’s multi-channel approach yielded an extraordinary year-on-year growth rate of 200%. The 2022 edition alone attracted over 1100 participants—300 attended in person, while more than 700 engaged remotely. International traction was notably strong, with teams participating from Singapore, Japan, Germany, and France.

The ADF team, Terminal Rank, emerged victorious among 152 competing teams, highlighting the event’s intensely competitive nature. Major General Susan Coyle commended the event for its crucial role in fostering skill development and strengthening connections within the cyber community.

The ADF Cyber Skills Challenge has unequivocally established itself as a monumental success. With back-to-back successful editions in 2021 and 2022, the event’s upward trajectory is a testament to its enormous potential for future growth and impact.
